Sean Gunn, known for his role in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, sheds light on the uncertain future of the team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since their debut in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, the group has become a staple in the MCU, appearing in six films, with the latest being 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which marked the conclusion of an era. Director James Gunn, Sean's brother, affirmed that Vol. 3 would be his final installment in the franchise before transitioning to DC Studios.

During the Saturn Awards, Sean Gunn spoke with Screen Rant, admitting his lack of insight into the Guardians' MCU trajectory. While he didn't dismiss the possibility of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 entirely, he expressed uncertainty, stating:

"To be honest, I have no idea. Marvel is always cooking up something, planning both the near and distant future. But if I claimed to know the fate of the Guardians, I'd be misleading you."

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 remains shrouded in mystery, Marvel Studios isn't under immediate pressure to pursue another installment with the characters. With the challenges brought by The Multiverse Saga, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, Marvel has faced various obstacles, including production delays due to strikes and mixed audience responses to recent MCU entries.

Forcing the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 solely based on past success would be shortsighted. Marvel must prioritize the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga, addressing unresolved storylines such as the fate of Kang after Jonathan Majors' departure. Additionally, several MCU projects, including reboots of Fantastic Four, Blade, X-Men, and the next two Avengers films, demand attention.

While fans eagerly anticipate the Guardians' return, delaying their comeback until after The Multiverse Saga's resolution could provide a more natural transition. If Avengers: Secret Wars serves as a soft reboot for the MCU, it could seamlessly reintroduce the team as the franchise moves forward. In the meantime, the entire Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is accessible for streaming on Disney+ and available for purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.
