International pop sensation Shakira has resolved with Spanish tax authorities, averting a high-stakes trial set to commence with a potential 14.5 million euro penalty. Shakira appeared in court and agreed to pay a 7 million euro (£6.1 million) fine.

The unexpected settlement, occurring on the scheduled trial day, spares Shakira from a protracted legal battle that was anticipated to involve numerous witnesses.

The singer entered the courtroom she greeted onlookers with a wave and a blown kiss.

In her statement to Sky News, Shakira, who had been facing six counts of alleged tax evasion between 2012 and 2014, Shakira mentioned her unwavering effort to set a positive example but emphasised the decision's alignment with the best interests of her children.

The pop star, mother to Milan and Sasha with ex-partner Gerard Pique, expressed her lawyers' confidence in a favourable ruling but opted for a resolution to protect her well-being and prioritise her family.

The tax dispute revolved around Shakira's residence during the specified period, and she consistently denied any wrongdoing. The singer consulted globally recognized tax authorities, PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited and Ernst & Young Global Limited, throughout the process. Shakira highlighted the toll of prolonged legal battles on high-profile individuals and professional athletes, stating her intent to move beyond the stress and focus on her children and upcoming career ventures.
