Trade union Unite has revealed plans and dates for strikes involving ground handlers and passenger assistance personnel at Gatwick Airport later this month due to an ongoing pay dispute. The union predicts that the initial four-day strike could disrupt 216 flights, impacting approximately 45,000 passengers, according to reports.

More than 230 employees, employed by two contracted firms at Gatwick Airport, are scheduled to engage in strikes on multiple dates in August, as a result of the disagreement concerning compensation, according to Unite, reports said.

The trade union asserts that these strikes will lead to significant disruptions in operations. The decision follows the resolution of a potential strike by roughly 1,000 Gatwick personnel from four different companies this summer, as these employees were offered substantial pay increases, as per reports.

Workers affiliated with ground handling company Red Handling, numbering over 230, are set to stage a four-day strike starting on August 18, followed by an additional four-day strike from August 25, encompassing the August bank holiday weekend, according to reports.

Concurrently, members of the union employed by Wilson James, the entity responsible for Gatwick's passenger assistance contract, intend to participate in a three-day strike commencing on August 18, along with an additional three-day strike beginning on August 22.

Unite contends that both Red Handling and Wilson James have fallen short in presenting proposals that align with the workers' expectations. Notably, Red Handling is entrusted with ground handling duties for several airlines at Gatwick, including Norse Atlantic, Norwegian, Delta, TAP Air Portugal, and Saudi.
