Four women from the United Kingdom will go to a remote section of Antarctica to work on activities such as running the world's remote post office and counting penguins on the island.

Clare Ballantyne, Mairi Hilton, Natalie Corbett, and Lucy Bruzzone were chosen from many candidates to manage the historic landmark Port Lockroy on Goudier Island.

The crew will forego home comforts to live and operate in a place with no running water or flushing toilets.


Ms. Corbett, who will be in charge of the gift store, will leave her husband at home for the trip, which she has nicknamed "a solo honeymoon." The ladies will share the island with a colony of gentoo penguins, whom Ms. Hilton will be in charge of monitoring, as well as subzero temperatures and virtually continual daylight.



The four ladies were among 6,000 who applied for the positions listed by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) organization.

They will be living together on the island for five months, during Christmas, and taking care of the charity flagship site. Their home for the next five months will be Port Lockroy- the most remote post office and museum. Isn’t it fascinating yet challenging?
