As the swarms of flying ants invade a larger part of the U.K., some Twitter users declared July 27 as Flying Ant Day 2023. This day is observed in the middle of July every ear, but it is a little bit late this year.

In search of mating partners?

Most of the ants except queens don’t have wings. But during summer the queens develop wings that help them fly and find male mates. This is their mating time and the wings are necessary for this. The swarm of ants appear during these days due to this biological reason.

Biologists believe that it can happen any day in this month and many days in this month witness giant black clouds of winged insects flying across the UK and Ireland. The Met O office detect these flying ants on Friday because they appear like rain on the radar.

A Met official said that every year the rain radar detects them during this period. A lot of animals like birds depend on these flying ants as their food source.

Scientists have said the swarms of ants have significance as they depend n the ecosystem both as prey and as a predator.
