One of the occurrences occurred in Germany at the FIFA World Cup of 2006, where referee Graham Poll sent three yellow cards to Josip Simunic, a Croatian defender, during a game. Croatia played Australia at the German World Cup's group stage.

Simunic received his second yellow card when the referee mistakenly thought he was an Australian player. Later in the match, the Croatian defender was dismissed after being issued a third yellow card. The former football referee acknowledged his error and resigned since he felt really embarrassed.

Australia had a tie, ending the game in a draw. At that event, Australia advanced to the round of 16, but Croatia failed to move past the group stage.
