FIFA World Cup 2022: Andre Onana leaves Cameroon squad ahead of group-stage match vs Serbia, here's why

Andre Onana, who is now 26 years old, was not selected to play for his nation in their encounter on Monday. During Saturday's practice, Onana and Rigobert Song talked about the playing style each used.

The seasoned defender suggested that the Inter Milan goalkeeper adopt a more direct style of play, which would require him to take fewer chances in front of his net.

Following their discussion, Rigobert Song concluded that the former member of the Barcelona youth team Onana should be removed from the World Cup roster, and he then headed back home.


The Athletic has reached out to the Cameroon Football Association for comment. Although Devis Epassy played the whole 90 minutes in Cameroon's first-day, 1-0 defeat to Switzerland, he has been re-instated to the starting XI.

Onana, who formerly played for Ajax, joined Inter Milan this summer on a free transfer. He has 35 caps for Cameroon. He started the season as a colleague of Inter's senior captain Samir Handanovic, but after the World Cup break in October, he took over as Inter's top player. Currently, Onana has 13 appearances and five shutouts for Inter this season.

If Brazil is defeated by Switzerland later on Monday, Cameroon and Brazil will be eliminated from the World Cup.

Cameroon will join Brazil in the round of 16. The Athletic has contacted the Cameroonian Football Association to obtain a comment. The next match for Cameroon is scheduled for Friday and will be played against Brazil.
