European energy crisis explained: What’s the reason and why cost of living is increasing in UK and Europe?

Energy prices have soared in the past month, and the winter is getting fiercer with each passing day, but gas service providers warn of a shortage in gas supply to make things worse.

The gas supply scenario in the United Kingdom seems strained by the war in Ukraine and Russia, and energy costs keep staggering north. The general populace has been switching off their heaters more often, and this is mainly due to the incentives that the gas company is offering. The gas company had incentivised households that used no gas during peak hours. For instance, if a household avoided switching on their heaters between 5 PM and 7 PM, the power company would pay the household back in cash. This scheme of doling out incentives is called the Demand Flexibility Service by the power operators. The 5-7 PM timeline has been set, keeping in mind the people returning home from work and school and beginning setting up for dinner.

The power sector unveiled a new set of contingency plans when freezing temperatures were experienced at the beginning of the month. This created a natural demand for energy among households. The Electricity System Operator (ESO), part of the National Grid, immediately requested two coal power plants to begin supplies.

The chills set in the country earlier this month, and temperatures fell below freezing, with snow in many parts of the country. The power sector was pushed to ramp up support for heating supplies, and many questioned whether that would be possible. Questions were raised following the cold spell whether the UK’s power supply would be able to provide power. The power sector had warned that nationwide blackouts due to the non-availability of gas were possible.

So, what was it that pressured the power sector to issue these warnings, and how are global factors stressing it out?

The National Grid was not sure they would be able to source the additional supplies looking at the demand for heating. This was mainly due to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. The grid planned three hours of compulsory blackouts throughout winter. Now the operators say there is a remote chance of this eventuality.

The war has crippled supplies to the UK and other parts of Europe. Not being able to cope with sanctions, Russia has cut its supply to Europe by almost 90%. Due to this stress, wholesale gas prices have soared by 210% since the war began. If supplies are not replenished, the chances of blackouts will increase, as conservation plans must be afoot to tide over the fierce winter months. On the other side, the usual electricity supply from the Netherlands, Belgium, and France cannot be relied upon as those nations need to adjust to meet their supplies needing to be completed. 43% of the UK’s power sector depends on gas, and if supplies falter, the grids will not be able to function at total capacity.

Excessive chills, like in 2018, can also hinder supplies as the grids would be affected.

The energy bills keep heading north as the prices worldwide keep rising, causing immense stress on the grids. In 2021 wholesale gas prices increased 250% when the energy crisis began. This led to at least twenty small power supply companies going bankrupt. Initially, the companies withstood the burden of the price increase, and when in October 2021, the load was decreased by lifting the price cap. Some small firms like Pure Planet and Avro Energy had to close operations. Summing up, the high prices of gas are mainly due to demand going up due to a fierce winter all over Europe, lack of supplies, and Russia invading Ukraine.
