Essex Police launches investigation into sexual assault allegations against MP Julian Knight

Essex Police has said that it is launching an investigation into the sexual assault allegations against UK’s independent MP Julian Knight. As per reports, the Met Police shelved its own probe into the matter and referred the case to the Essex police to investigate the Solihull MP in March. However, it still remains unclear why the case was transferred.

While Knight has categorically denied all allegations against him as “false” and “malicious”, Essex Police confirmed on Tuesday that it is investigating an allegation of “serious sexual assault” against the MP. The Essex Police statement said that they have agreed to take on an investigation which has been referred to them by the Metropolitan Police Service and they are investigating an allegation of serious sexual assault.

It further added that the detectives who specialise in cases of this kind will gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation. The senior investigating officer has extensive experience with the force. The force also mentioned that the investigation "remains at an early stage”.


It is to note that MP for Solihull, Julian Knight has held the post since 2015 and the Conservatives had stripped him of the party whip when the first allegations of sexual assault were first raised. Now, Knight is an independent MP. Conservative party had refused to restore the whip to Knight even after the Met Police dropped the case against the MP. The part had said at the time that it received several other complaints against Knight.
