England Women’s football team captain Leah Williamson has revealed that she suffers from endometriosis, a condition which results in severe period pain and menstrual irregularities. The 25-year-old Arsenal defender shared that the fear of a flare-up right before an important match nearly ruined her chances at participating in the 2022 European Championship.
Williamson was diagnosed with the condition in 2021. An episode of intense period pains, and a concussion injury just before England’s match with Norway in the Euro semi-final, left her anxious.
In an interview with Women's Health, Williamson shared her agony. The 25-year-old athlete had suffered a concussion before the Euros which Williamson said, might have also impacted her next period quite severely. Williamson shared that her condition was really bad and at one point she thought she would not be able to play. Fear of an endometriosis flare up could be huge, said the athlete as one is not really injured before the tournament but what if they are still unable to make it. Despite this, Williamson led the Lionesses to victory against Germany in the final match.
