Energumene to make a comeback at Cork. Here’s what happened

Energumene, the Champion Chase winner, will have the opportunity to make his seasonal comeback after this afternoon's meeting at Cork passed a morning inspection.

Energumene, trained by Willie Mullins, is the Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase star after sweeping to victories at the previous season's Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals. The recent cold snap made his anticipated comeback questionable, but the track was cleared for use before the scheduled 8 am inspection.

According to Val O'Connell, the IHRB clerk of the course, the track is safe for racing, and the meeting will go on as planned following a precautionary inspection this morning in Cork.

However, Newcastle was not lucky as the lousy ground was listed as the reason for cancellation after a 7.30 am check. The track's meeting on Saturday was cancelled just before the first race due to the jockey and trainer worries about the weather and the course's lack of improvement overnight.

Punchestown's Sunday meeting was also cancelled. We regretfully had to cancel tomorrow's meeting due to the snow that fell overnight, expected snow, and severe frost that is predicted for tonight, added Brendan Sheridan, clerk of the course.

The conference won't be rescheduled in the coming days because there isn't expected to be any improvement through the following week, and temperatures will continue to be below-freezing. On Monday, a new time for the meeting will be revealed.
