Emma Raducanu starts 2023 on a high note with win over Linda Fruhvirtova in Auckland

Raducanu’s first Wimbledon match was against 150-ranked Russian Vitalia Diatchenko, when she was ranked No 338.

She won that round against Diatchenko, netting £75,000, her highest win at that point. Coming into Wimbledon, she had earned just £29,889 in prize money.

After Diatchenko came wins over the former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrusova and Sorana Cirstea.

Raducanu had to drop out in the fourth round of the competition with breathing problems.

And then Raducanu just went and won the US Open, winning nine matches in a row and not dropping a single set as she clinched a grand slam title.

In back-to-back matches against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Shelby Rogers – conqueror of the top seed, Ashleigh Barty – she tore through 11 games in a row. She led Sorribes Tormo 6-0, 5-0 and match point

The final was a meeting between two teenagers as Raducanu faced Canadian Leylah Fernandez, 19, in the youngest grand slam final in more than two decades.

In Britain 9.2 million viewers tuned in to Channel 4 as Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a grand slam title in the Open era and the first player to win a major in her second grand slam tournament.

A day after the US Open ended Raducanu was an invitee to the Met Gala, where celebrities were seeking her out, marking her for future GOAT status.
