A member of Parliament from the Conservative Party has to be nominated by at least 20 fellow MPs to enter the race to become PM. This is then followed by a two-step selection process. The first stage involves MPs voting for candidates in secret ballots. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated after each round until two participants are left. In the second stage, card-carrying grassroots party members vote for the last two candidates.

Boris Johnson will continue to remain the PM until a new prime minister is elected. The new Prime Minister will be announced on 5th September and the new Prime Minister will take over the next day, 6th September.

There were eight candidates in the fray at the beginning of the election process, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, junior trade minister Penny Mordaunt, foreign secretary Liz Truss, former Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch, Attorney General Suella Braverman, Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Tom Tugendhat, and Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are the remaining two candidates, after five rounds of voting.

Indian origin leader, 42-year-old Rishi Sunak, has been leading the voting rounds so far. He has previously served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022. If elected, he would become the first person of colour to become the prime minister of the UK.

46-year-old, Liz Truss has been a member of parliament since 2010 from South West Norfolk. She is currently serving as the Foreign Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities. She has worked in various cabinet positions under previous prime ministers David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson.

The UK generally holds elections every five years and people vote for the representative in their local area, also referred to as a constituency. The party which wins the most constituencies is declared the winner of the election and the winning party then picks a candidate for the post of PM.
