Eddie Howe says Newcastle United will replace Jonjo Shelvey as player moves to join Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United will now replace Jonjo Shelvey after the winger decided to sign a permanent agreement with Nottingham Forest, according to manager Eddie Howe. Newcastle United F.C. manager stated that while he didn’t want to lose Jonjo Shelvey, he has to respect the midfielder’s wishes or preferences.

Shelvey requested a longer contract, and Forest was willing to extend a two-and-a-half-year offer. Howe remarked at his news conference prior to the League Cup semifinal between Newcastle United and Southampton that Jongo has had injuries this season and he would not want to lose him…“But I have to understand again, similar to Chris Wood, the player's wishes with his contract coming to an end,” he added.

He stated that retaining Jonjo will be challenging due to his career aspirations. Holding onto players who want to depart isn't always necessary, each situation must be evaluated and the best decision made for both the player and club.



When asked about filling the void left by Shelvey, Howe expressed reluctance to see him go and plans to seek a replacement, “From a football decision, absolutely not and we will see what we can do in the market to try to bring a player,” he added.

The situation is challenging; however, the Toon boss wants to keep Jonjo for footballing reasons but must also consider his situation. Jonjo is reportedly in talks with Nottingham Forest but the speaker doesn't know the progress of those talks.
