If your first drink in the morning before you start your day is coffee, then you might be damaging your health. A new study has revealed that drinking coffee on an empty stomach right after waking up could be bad for your health.

A study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, has explained the impact of java on your body's metabolism and blood glucose control.

According to researchers, if you haven't had a proper night's sleep and then drink coffee the next day right after waking up, especially on an empty stomach, then it can have a severe impact on blood glucose control and could seriously harm your hormonal balance.

The blood glucose acts as a prevention for several medical issues including diabetes and heart disease. The study revealed that poor sleep and coffee intake, independently, impact glucose tolerance in the body, leading to insulin sensitivity in healthy adults.

The researchers from the University of Bath conducted the study on a group of healthy women and men who all underwent three different experiments conducted overnight to monitor the impact of caffeine on the human body if consumed in the morning in different scenarios.

The study, for which researchers collected blood samples from the participants to screen their blood glucose response, showed that disrupted sleep had no major effect on the glucose levels.

However, consuming a cup of strong black coffee first thing in the morning after waking up did increase the blood glucose response in the participants.

The cause behind this sudden rise is believed to be cortisol, which spikes blood glucose in the body by releasing stored glucose.

The researchers suggested that rather than consuming coffee on an empty stomach in the morning, people should drink coffee following breakfast.
