King Charles has kept his cancer diagnosis a secret. Back in February, the monarch declared that he was fighting cancer, but he purposefully chose not to reveal the specific type of the disease.

According to a source from Buckingham Palace quoted by The NY Times on Friday, that decision was based on empathy.

Instead of focusing only on one type of cancer, they said that the King's decision to not disclose the type of cancer was a conscious choice to be able to reach out to the widest number of people who are experiencing the disease, as quoted in a report by The NY Post.

Charles has not disclosed any additional information, despite Buckingham Palace's earlier confirmation this year that the 76-year-old king does not have prostate cancer. The royal is not under any obligation to provide more details, despite the fact that the lack of specificity has generated a great deal of conjecture and theories on social media.

The royal has also maintained his sense of humour despite his ongoing fight with cancer. During a Friday meeting with leaders from various faith communities at Waltham Forest Town Hall in the London neighbourhood of Walthamstow, Charles joked that he's "still alive" when asked about his health.

Palace sources confirmed that Charles' treatment has been moving in a positive direction, and the treatment cycle will continue into next year as a managed condition.
