Detainees protest, cause disturbance at Harmondsworth Immigration Centre in UK

Around 100 detainees staged a protest at Harmondsworth Immigration Centre on Saturday. The reason behind the rally is thought to be an extended power outage. The power cut left the facility without power for over 24 hours. No injuries have been reported.

The facility management planned to move 100 people to make space for new people from Manston. The immigration facility is reported to be overcrowded at the moment. However, further proceedings have been stopped because of the protest. The Home Office contractors and emergency services are dealing with the demonstration.





A Home Office spokesperson shared that the facility went through a power outage, and work is being done to resolve the issue. Appropriate authorities have been notified, and they are at the scene as well. He added that the safety of employees and staff is a priority.

A Metropolitan police spokesperson told The Guardian that the police also support the facility. The officers visited and helped at the location at around 19:45 hours on Friday, 4 November. He added that officers were still present at the location.
