Hamlins said their clients were victims of "appalling criminal acts" and "serious invasions of privacy." The lawsuit alleges that the publisher hired private investigators to secretly plant bugs in people's cars and homes and train individuals to record and listen to people's live phone conversations.

It is also alleged that police officials were paid for "inside reports" that individuals were impersonated to obtain medical information from hospitals and clinics and used that illegal means of manipulation and plans to access bank accounts, credit histories, and financial transactions.

The Hamlins stated that the individuals they represented had united to expose the truth and hold the reporters responsible for this, as they still hold top positions in the journalism industry. The impurity of journalism is shocking and harms everyone.

In a statement, Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, and Mail Online, claimed that these false, defamatory claims had been made to destroy the position of the leading daily, and there is no substantial evidence to show for it.
