Cornwall earthquake: Locals wake up to ‘rumble’ as 1.5 magnitude quake hits country

This morning, Cornwall experienced an earthquake that was reportedly felt by locals as a "rumble". The seismic activity occurred around 6:31 am, approximately 9.3 kilometres south of Redruth.

According to reports from both VolcanoDiscovery and the British Geological Survey, the earthquake that occurred in Cornwall this morning had a magnitude of 1.5 on the Richter scale. Although it was a relatively minor quake, it was recorded at a depth of two kilometres. Reports suggest that the tremors were felt as far away as Portleve, approximately 14 miles from the epicentre.




Residents of the city shared their experiences via several social media platforms - some locals reported feeling and hearing about the earthquake in Cornwall. One individual, who was over 10 miles away from Helston, reported hearing a rumble and feeling a shake. Another person described the sound of a large truck approaching their house, even though they don't live near a road before their house shook and the sound subsided.

The most recent earthquake in Cornwall before this morning's event occurred last October near Truro and had a magnitude of 0.5. A new map has been released showing the top 10 strongest earthquakes to ever hit Britain, following two smaller tremors that occurred earlier this month.

Although the UK has been spared from the more severe quakes seen in other parts of the world, it experiences a significant amount of seismological activity. In fact, the British Geological Survey (BGS) reports that between 200 and 300 earthquakes are located within the UK's borders each year.
