Conservative peer Michelle Mone has decided to take a leave of absence from the Lords, her spokesperson said. She will be taking leave from the House of Lords with immediate effect. According to the spokesperson, Mone has taken the decision to clear her name of the allegations she has been "unjustly" accused of.
Mone's decision follows reports which have suggested that the Tory peer has received millions from a PPE company. The government is also not likely to oppose the Labour Party's bid to force the release of documents related to a £200-million contract with PPE Medpro. A vote in this regard will take place on December 6.
Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner stated that Mone gave "preferential" and "fast-track" treatment to PPE Medpro during the pandemic. Rayner called it "a scandal of epic proportions." However, Mone denied having any link with the company. Mone stated that she was just asked to "help" during a "national emergency." She said that she would cooperate with the investigation.

A member of Parliament from the Conservative Party has to be nominated by at least 20 fellow MPs to enter the race to become PM. This is then followed by a two-step selection process. The first stage involves MPs voting for candidates in secret ballots. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated after each round until two participants are left. In the second stage, card-carrying grassroots party members vote for the last two candidates.

Mone's decision implies that she will not attend debates or sittings of the House. She will also be unable to claim any allowance or vote on proceedings. She will also no longer need to adhere to parliamentary rules that require her to declare her interests, including her shareholdings, directorships, and non-financial interests. But the Lords' standards commissioners can block a leave of absence request. Notably, Mone is already under investigation for several "potential breaches" of the code of conduct of the House of Lords.
