Community rallies to save Europe's oldest student newspaper

Edinburgh University's historic student newspaper, "the Student," has been rescued from the brink of closure. Founded in 1887 by the renowned author Robert Louis Stevenson, this treasured publication had faced an uncertain future due to a loss of major advertising support. However, a successful online fundraising campaign has not only secured its immediate survival but also emphasized the community's unwavering commitment to independent journalism.

Nut Graf: Joe Sullivan, editor-in-chief of the Student, highlighted the newspaper's fragile financial state and the critical role of sustaining its print presence. Launched on October 5th with an initial goal of £1,000, the fundraising campaign has surpassed all expectations, amassing over £2,000 in donations.

Importance of Physical Publication: Sullivan underscored the significance of preserving the newspaper's print edition, stating, "Having been in print for 186 years, that was something the paper did not want to lose." The tangible presence, available at counters and newsstands throughout the student community, remains vital for its survival alongside the digital format.


Community Solidarity and Fundraising Success: The remarkable success of the fundraising campaign has brought joy and gratitude to the Student's team. Sullivan expressed their delight, saying, "We are so overjoyed; we have hit double our initial goal. We couldn't ask for more really, we're all really excited and really grateful." The generosity of the donations, particularly from the student community, reflects the strong desire to see the publication continue its vital work.

Allocation of Funds: The majority of the raised funds will be channeled toward covering printing expenses, ensuring that the newspaper maintains its presence on paper. The remaining contributions will be invested in acquiring enhanced equipment to improve the newspaper's overall production quality.

Editorial Independence Preserved: Before resorting to fundraising, the Student contemplated seeking financial assistance from the university. However, it was a unanimous decision that retaining editorial independence was paramount. This independence has been the bedrock of their honest and unbiased reporting, even when addressing contentious issues involving the university and the students' association.

Notable Alumni and Commitment: The Student boasts a rich history, with former reporters including prominent figures like Laura Kuenssberg, Helen Pidd, Gordon Brown, Robin Cook, and James Kirkup. Presently, a dedicated team of 25 volunteers continues the tradition, resolute in preserving the newspaper's legacy.
