Comedian Rhod Gilbert opens up about stage-4 cancer struggles, 'hopeful about future'

Stand-up comedian Rhod Gilbert provided an update on his health following the revelation of his cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

The comedian has opened up about his struggle with stage 4 cancer since receiving his diagnosis. In a recent interview with BBC Radio Wales, he provided an update and stated that he is still "positive" about the future.

The 54-year-old comedian had to postpone a handful of his live performances this spring. He said, "I had a terribly sore throat, tightness through my neck. I was having to cancel shows because I couldn't breathe, I was having all sorts of problems and we couldn't get to the bottom of it."


His signs worsened while he was in Cuba in May, conducting a trek to raise money for the Cardiff Velindre Cancer Centre, where he is currently receiving treatment, according to Wales Online. He remarked:

"I noticed lumps started popping up in places they shouldn't be. It turns out I've got stage four cancer."

Rhod, who underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, also claimed to have contracted COVID-19 while on the trip. He said, "I came home with cancer and covid from a Velindre fundraising trek... the irony of that. I went as a Velindre patron and came home as a patient."

He claimed he is unclear if his treatment has been effective but yet feels "happy, positive, and optimistic." He said, "I'm feeling good and feel like I'm recovering day-by-day."

"If it hasn't worked as well as I've hoped, then maybe I'll have to go back for more treatment," he added.


He continued by saying that on certain days, he feels "well enough to do some writing," and indicated that he wanted to write a show about his struggle with cancer.

The Welsh comedian praised Velindre Cancer Centre, noting that he couldn't think of a finer place to get medical care.
