CMA fines three firms for fixing Rangers FC merchandise price
The Competition and Markets Authority has fined many firms like Elite Sports, JD Sports and Rangers for trying to fix the prices of several Rangers FC merchandise. The total fine imposed by the CMA has been estimated at over £2 million.

Firms Are Given Discounts On Fines For Co-Operation
The fine imposed on Elite Sports is £459,000. JD Sports was fined £1,485,000 while Rangers were fined £225,000. The three firms admitted to being illegally involved as the penalties comprised a settlement concession.
Furthermore, CMA gave Elite Sports and JD Sports discounts on their fines for being the whistleblower. They co-operated with CMA’s Leniency Programme and gave details about their illegal involvement.
When the law was breached, Elite Sports was the manufacturer of Rangers-branded clothing and sold Rangers-marked merchandise. JD Sports was the sole UK-wide major retailer selling those products then.
FAQ
- What did CMA’s Executive Director of Enforcement say about this?
Michael Grenfell is CMA’s EDE, and he said that in the present time when people are struggling with the living crisis, football fans must benefit from merchandise at a competitive price.Contrary to this, Elite, JD Sports and Rangers conspired to set a high price.CMA’s decision to fine these firms sends out the message quite clearly to football clubs and all businesses that any form of illegal conspiracy is intolerable. - What did CMA’s investigation report find?
During the 2018-2019 football season, Rangers FC was concerned because JD Sports sold the Rangers-dupe top at a less cost than Elite, the club’s ‘retail partner’.Therefore, the three parties decided that JD Sports would raise the Rangers adult short-sleeved home dupe shirt’s price to £60, making it equivalent to Elite. Also, Elite and JD Sports, beyond being involved with Rangers, decided to fix Rangers-branded clothing’s retail prices at the end of 2019’s football session to protect their profit gaps and avoid competition.
