After road workers announced a 12-day strike to coincide with rail walkouts, they warned travellers to prepare for additional holiday chaos. The PCS union announced that a series of staggering strikes by National Highways workers, who operate and maintain the country's roads, will occur from December 16 to January 7.

Using critical safety services like rolling roadblocks, smart motorways, and lane closures, traffic officers help keep traffic moving and users safe on the roads. The walkouts, which run the risk of paralysing the road system, will take place concurrently with planned rail strikes by RMT members. On December 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 17, as well as on January 3, 4, and 7, there will be rail strikes. In a pay dispute, Heathrow's ground handlers have also declared they will strike before Christmas.

The earliest recipe for a fruitcake is from ancient Rome. It was similar to the energy bar their soldiers used when they went to battle. It was made by mixing pomegranate seeds, pine nuts and raisins into barley mash. Historians believe fruitcakes were also left inside the tombs of the dead in ancient Egypt.
