China theatres witness fall in National Day holiday season collection, ‘Homecoming’ dominates box office
China's box office has registered a fall in its National Day weekend collection compared to previous years. For this year, "Homecoming" bagged the most.

Artisan Gateway consultancy said "Homecoming" bagged a whopping $59.3 million on September 30, accounting for a 67% market share. The aggregate collection on September 30 and October 1 stood at $88 million. But the figure is considered extremely low compared to the much bigger collections made during October 1 weekend in previous years. Notably, the film "The Battle at Lake Changjin," which hit the theatres during the National Day weekend last year, bagged $203 million in just three days.
Some major reasons hurting the Chinese theatres are over-dependence on holiday seasons, weakening supply of local titles, and shortage of foreign movies, especially Hollywood. China's strict anti-COVID measures, which still require city lockdowns, travel restrictions, and mass testing, are also significant factors. Economic problems have added to these woes. Currently, China is facing growing unemployment and a property crisis.
