Celtic Football Club has acquired Japanese international player Tomoki Iwata from the Yokohama F. Marinos.

Iwata will join on an initial loan from the Yokohama F. Marinos until the conclusion of the current campaign. However, because of a mandatory buy clause, he will complete a long-term permanent transfer in the summer only.

He joins defender Yuki Kobayashi from Vissel Kobe and right-back, Alistair Johnston, from CF Montreal as Celtic's third addition before the January transfer market formally opens.

Iwata, who plays both midfield and defense, was awarded the J League Player of the Year last month after helping his team win the league title. He has four caps for Japan but was left off of their World Cup roster.

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Celtic, has acquired the player twice, once in January 2021 before bringing him to Yokohama and again later at Parkhead. He called Iwata a "really committed" footballer with "great attributes."
