British passport application: Major changes likely from February, 6 key points

The UK Government has announced that a number of changes are likely to take place pertaining to British passport applications. The cost of applying for a British passport will rise beginning in February this year, according to reports. However, the Home Office has said that change is subject to Parliamentary scrutiny.

The impending increased prices for all passport applications will impact everyone who is applying for their first passport. This is the first modification of its sort in five years, and anyone applying will have to pay a higher fee from February.

Here are five major points of the plan for the new British passport application:


1. Anyone applying will need to pay a higher cost beginning in February, marking the first change of this sort in five years.

2. Adults' usual online application fees in the UK have increased from £75.50 to £82.50.

3. Online application fees will rise from £49 to £53.50 for children.

4. Postal application fees for adults will increase from £85 to £93.

5. For children, postal application fees will increase from £58.50 to £64.

6. Additionally, priority service costs are being aligned so that customers pay the same. The new rates will enter into force on February 2, 2023.

Additionally, the costs will help cover the cost of processing passport applications, providing consular assistance abroad, such as for lost or stolen passports, and processing British citizens at UK borders.

The rise will also make it possible for the government to keep enhancing its offerings. The additional fees apply to passport renewals as well as new applications.

According to the HM Passport Office, since January of last year, more than 95 per cent of standard applications have been handled in less than 10 weeks. Customers are still being urged to apply well in advance of their trip.
