The National Grid confirms that millions of British households will earn cashback by using appliances in off-peak hours notified by the grid. At the same time, the grid warned of power cuts if the demand kept rising. Throughout winter, gas supplies would be affected by the Russian-Ukraine war, and the rise in energy costs has sent the European nations into planning mode.

Most of mainland Europe receives its gas supplies from Russia, and the supply lines have already been closed. Britain has already warned that who would be affected by the power cut would depend on how many gas power stations would be closed down during winter.

However, the grid said this is the worst-case situation if there is high demand and pressure on the supplies. However, if there are blackouts, they would be in spans of three hours for each affected area.

Families are encouraged to sign up for schemes and use their appliances during non-peak hours. Households would be encouraged to use electricity during non-peak hours, mainly after 7 pm. Similarly, businesses would be encouraged to switch to generators or batteries during peak hours and save energy. This “demand flexibility scheme” scheme will be in place from November to March.

Three power companies, Uniper, EDF, and Drax, are trying to meet the target of two gigawatts of power savings to help meet demand. Households and businesses face a harsh winter due to the ongoing war.
