In what can be called great news, an endangered Western chimpanzee has been born at Chester Zoo.

The animal is regarded as the ‘world's rarest chimpanzee’ by the conservationists. The zoo is located at Upton-by-Chester, Cheshire, England.

Although the birth was a small addition, it is surely a vital boost to the global population of this critically endangered species, Chester Zoo said.

The "baby boy", who is in good health, has bonded well with his mother and the rest of the horde, it added.

The chimpanzee will now be named after a rock or pop star as per the tradition of the zoo.

The zoo has previously welcomed Alice (Cooper), Dylan (Bob) and Annie (Lennox) - so watch this space, said Andrew Lenihan from Chester Zoo.

Mum ZeeZee and the new baby instantly bonded. The mother is doing a great job of cradling him closely and caring for him, Lenihan added.

Although both chimps and Orangutans have the ability to learn sign language, use tools, what sets them apart is their ability to understand the reason behind their actions. Orangutans are so smart that they share 97 per cent of its DNA with humans. They can be trained to use hammers and nails. Sadly, they are critically endangered due to habitat loss.

This species is "under huge threat" in the wild due to the hunting for the illegal bushmeat trade, extensive habitat loss, diseases spread by humans and forest destruction across West Africa, Lenihan further said.

The birth of this chimpanzee is a small but important boost to the global population of Western chimpanzees. This comes at a time when it seems to be most needed for this critically endangered species, he added.

These Western chimpanzees seem to have become extinct in Burkina Faso, Benin and Togo.

Zoo’s animal and plant director Mike Jordan said that in the last 25 years, the world has lost around 80% of its Western chimpanzee population. So, the arrival of a healthy baby at Chester gives us real hope that we can help turn things around for this species.
