BBC has decided to cancel the holiday episode of its oldest TV quiz show following complaints from contestants about insufficient support for those with disabilities. The Times has reported that both the BBC and Lifted Entertainment, the show's producer, have issued apologies for the "distressing" experience encountered by a contestant in the Christmas edition of University Challenge.

According to reports, participants were informed that their team captain would need to clarify everything, causing distress. One contestant expressed their preference to avoid broadcasting their disability on network TV during the Christmas season.

A neurodivergent contestant had requested subtitles to facilitate quicker responses to questions, but the request was declined. Despite participating in the show, this individual expressed that the process was "overwhelming and overstimulating."

Apologies were issued by both the BBC and Lifted Entertainment. A BBC spokesman mentioned that they are collaborating with producers to enhance cross-industry access in their programs, ensuring a consistent approach. Apologies were extended to the individuals and teams involved, the spokesman added.

The National Federation of the Blind of the UK issued a statement, urging the abandonment and re-recording of the entire series.

They emphasised the distressing nature of the experience for the two contestants, who anticipated fair competition based on their access requirements being met.

They stated that it is essential that the entire series be withdrawn and restarted.

Christmas University Challenge is a seasonal variation of the BBC Two quiz show. It shows teams comprised of esteemed alumni, competing in representation of their respective alma maters.

Fourteen teams are vying for victory in seven initial matches of the Christmas University Challenge. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals, leading to a final showdown between the last two for the coveted title of Christmas series champions.

Following the format of the main show, contestants engage in a battle of wits, facing a series of questions. In the particular episode that is under scrutiny of ableism, filmed in November, two colleges from Oxford and Cambridge were in a head-to-head competition.
