Tonight, the BBC will broadcast the new drama, Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette tells the story of the modern and avant-garde young queen who left Austria at the age of 14 to marry the Dauphin of France.

She must produce a Bourbon heir to ensure France and Austria's alliance, but she is as unprepared for the role because of her awkward teenage husband. With Louis still not consummating the marriage four months later, Marie realises that producing an heir will be difficult.

The BBC announced in October 2021 that it had pre-purchased the series and would be involved in the production and distribution process. According to Vogue and Variety, the series will be created by an all-female writing team and will offer a "feminist take" on Marie Antoinette's life.

Emilia Schüle will play the role of Marie Antoinette. She will be joined by an international cast including Louis Cunningham, Jack Archer, Jasmine Blackborow, Gaia Weiss, James Purefoy, Marthe Keller.
