Avalanche on Berthoud Pass kills snowboarder

As the weather is drastically changing in the northern hemisphere, a man surfing in the snow was killed by an avalanche while some others were buried. The deceased's identity was not made public.

A snowboarder was killed in an avalanche on Berthoud Pass near the village of Winter Park, Grand County authorities said. The avalanche occurred at about 12:50 pm on the west side of the pass. The incident occurred when a snowboarder triggered an avalanche on a slope where another snowboarder had set off an avalanche at the same moment, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

Four persons were captured in the avalanche, while two groups were buried in the slide, according to the inquiry. One of them, a 44-year-old man, was saved by family members and witnesses, however the other one could not be rescued. Nearby crowd attempted life-saving procedures on the man, but unfortunately he passed away at the spot.

Response to this incident included the Grand County Sheriff's Office, Grand County EMS, Grand County Search and Rescue, Alpine Search and Rescue, East Grand Fire Department, Flight For Life, and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. When it is considered suitable, authorities will provide the deceased's identity and the confirmed cause of death. CAIC had issued a warning on several wind-loaded slopes that were steeper than roughly 30 degrees.

According to the centre, the majority of the Northern and Central mountains are experiencing comparable weather conditions, and the threat will last through Tuesday and beyond. The Central Mountains' Western region will have level 4 avalanche threat on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the centre, this fresh, high-density snowfall will cause the snowpack to exceed its breaking threshold, potentially triggering large-scale natural avalanches. The centre reports that since December 23, there have been at least two more instances of avalanches that almost buried people after being triggered near Marble and on Berthoud Pass.
