Astronomer locked out of her Twitter account for months over ‘intimate’ video of meteor

After posting a short video of a meteor, Oxfordshire astronomer Mary McIntyre was locked out her Twitter account for three months. The content moderation staffs at the social media network informed her that her six-second animated film of the meteor had information uploaded without the participant's authorization. She could have removed the tweet, but it would mean admitting she had breached the rules when she hadn't.

McIntyre exhausted the online appeals procedure during her what became a three-month suspension after it started with just 12 hours. McIntyre could regain access to her account only after the news of her suspension was publicized.

While Twitter's new owner, Elon Musk, is still figuring out how to run the platform, he has fired a lot of its content moderators who track abuse. McIntyre stated in her appeal that she was feeling cut off from the world without her interaction on social media.




Twitter's former head of trust and integrity, Yoel Roth, claimed that the layoffs did not affect the "majority" of the 2,000 content moderators working on a front-line review. However, the company's contract moderators got sacked last week.

McIntyre claimed that other astronomers had disseminated the film on her behalf without repercussions. She was concerned that if she accepted Twitter's reinstatement requirements, her non-existent misdeed would be highlighted in background checks because she works with schoolchildren to teach astronomy.
