Asda surprises thousands of customers with free cash ahead of Christmas

Shoppers at Asda received a free £5 gift as part of the store's loyalty programme when staff members noted a few customers were having technical difficulties.

Before Christmas, Asda customers received a surprise present of free cash from the store. The money was distributed to hundreds of thousands of customers as part of the retailer's loyalty programme. Customers who enrol in the programme can receive vouchers that will save them money on food expenses.

Before being applied, rewards are placed into a cash pot within their account. However, there have been problems with the rewards program's banks needing to update, which prevented thousands of buyers from receiving their prizes.

Customers expressed dissatisfaction that the money had disappeared and, in some cases, had been utilised. The retail behemoth has since added £5 for free to make up for those who missed out.

One customer said that the project had been dubbed a co-worker incentive to ensure that the accounts could be topped up with the free money in time for Christmas.
