As King Charles looks to shrink monarchy, Prince Edward may not become Duke of Edinburgh

Because of King Charles' ambitions to streamline the monarchy, Prince Edward may lose out on becoming Duke of Edinburgh, a promise made to him by the Queen before her death. The late monarch had told her youngest son that once his father died, he would take over as Duke of Edinburgh.

When Sophie Wessex married Edward in June 1999, she wrote down the commitment and gave it to her as a wedding gift.
