According to Manuel Akanji, the Manchester City star, the atmosphere at Anfield dropped well below his expectations on the previous weekend. The defender spoke about the home ground of Liverpool with his teammates and questioned the club's reputation regarding its fans.

Growing Rivalry:

Though neither side seems to admit it now, with every fixture between City and Liverpool, the rivalry between the club appears to be growing.

In last weekend's 1-0 victory of the Reds against the Etihad Stadium, Mohamed Salah scored the all-important goal.

The atmosphere of the match was charged throughout. Pep Guardiola was targeted with coins and other things as he looked to leave the dugout, he revealed at full-time. But Akanji was surprised at the quietness of the stadium when he went about his pre-game routine.

He told Sportsmail that the stadium "was so quiet" when they walked into the stadium for their warm-up and found no "booing or anything." He also said that he expected the stadium "would be crowded" with a "mood against" them.

'Wait till the game starts.'

He further added that when he questioned Riyad Mahrez about the atmosphere, Mahrez told him to "wait till the game started, "which was a completely "different atmosphere" when the game started. He continued that it was deafening when their "goal was disallowed," and Liverpool scored.

Through a statement released after the match, Liverpool revealed that City fans had thrown 'vile chants' toward their fans and would take action against those involved by working with relevant authorities.
