The band is a pioneer in fusion and folk rock, combining classical raagas with rock. It was originally made up of Amit Kilam, Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty and Rahul Ram. Today, only Kilam and Ram are part of the band from the original group.

Uday Benegal, Mahesh Tinaikar, Zubin Balaporia, Mark Selwyn, Jayesh Gandhi and Mark Menezes got together under the banner of Rock Machine in 1984. But they changed the group’s name and began experimenting with new sounds in 1993 by including Indian instruments like the tabla. Their first video, Pretty Child, released in 1993, was a huge hit and won them an MTV Video Music Award.

If you were around in the ’90s, you would possibly remember the band’s song Dhoom Pichuck Dhoom, released as part of its debut album in 1998. The popularity of the “Hindi rock band” formed by medical student Palash Sen skyrocketed after its release. In 2001, Euphoria played at the UN, along with Pakistani band Junoon.

Founding band member Vishal Dadlani is today better known for his compositions in Hindi cinema. But when the group was launched, Pentagram was popular for its rock music and, later, electronica.

Among the most famous bands the city has produced, Skinny Alley was formed by Jayashree Singh, her husband Gyan Singh, and Amyt Dutta. The band combined rock, funk and jazz and had a late night alter ego called Pinknoise.

Formed to fill in for another band at a college festival, Motherjane later went on to open for Megadeth and Machine Head. It was ranked No. 1 in Rock Street Journal’s bands of the decade in 2010.

One of India’s most enduring rock bands, TAAQ has released seven albums so far. The band combines classic rock with blues, jazz and funk, and has toured the US, Europe and Asian countries.

One of the earliest rock bands from Kolkata, Krosswindz was the first band from this part of the country to release an album of original English tracks. The band combines folk and fusion sounds, and has produced nine albums in Bengali.
