Footballer Joey Barton's half-brother Michael Barton killed Anthony in a racist ambush by hitting him with an ice axe on his head. Anthony was with his cousin and girlfriend as thugs chased the three while hurling racial abuse at them. The girlfriend and cousin managed to escape, but Anthony perished from his injuries after being hit by an axe in his skull. Paul Taylor was 20 years old and smashed the axe in Anthony's head. He was given 23 years and eight months in prison. Michael, also guilty of murder, will walk free. Michael was to serve 18 years without parole, but one year was reduced after a High Court appeal in 2016. The reduction came after the judges saw a remarkable transformation in his conduct and outlook. The panel decided Barton could be released after his progress in custody. Anthony's mother forgave the killers as she did not want to feel hatred and anger, which killed her son in the first place.
