Annual Sunday Times Schools Guide is out! See list of top schools in Northern Ireland

The annual Sunday Times Schools Guide has named St Mary's Grammar School as Northern Ireland's top-performing secondary school.

The comprehensive guide was released on December 9. While expressing his happiness over the accolade, St Mary's Grammar School's principal Paul McClean stated that the grades were not his primary goal.

Three Belfast schools secured the next three spots on the list. While Aquinas Diocesan Grammar School was ranked second, the third place was taken by Our Lady and St Patrick's College. Strathearn School was able to get the fourth spot.


Meanwhile, Friends' School Lisburn, St Dominic's, Lumen Christi College, Sullivan Upper School, and Rainey Endowed School were ranked fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively.

Banbridge Academy came at number ten. The list of these top ten schools was released in the 30th edition of Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2023. Once again, the quality of Northern Irish grammar schools has shone in the national rankings, with seven of these schools ranked in the top 50.


The guide used the first post-pandemic results for independent and state schools since the Covid-19 pandemic in Northern Ireland, Wales, and England.
