Six-time Grand Slam winner Boris Becker had to serve eight months in prison under the insolvency act and was then deported to Germany. While in Germany, Boris Becker interviewed German television about the hostile environment he experienced in jail, breaking his silence. The tennis icon was sentenced to two and half years in prison by a British court, of which he was made to serve eight months.

Due to the increase of convict populations in British jails, Boris Becker was released by a fast-track scheme.

Due to insolvency, Becker had to go to prison, which is weird, given that the sports icon had so much money. He was proven guilty of tax evasion and was handed a suspended sentence of two years in a court in Munich. In 2017 he again declared bankruptcy but this time in a UK court. However, the court accused him of lying and hiding assets worth £2.5 million from creditors. For this, the court in the UK gave Boris Becker a prison sentence of two and a half years. The UK authorities released him due to a lack of prison space in British jails, and luckily for Becker; he was immediately deported to Germany.

From the court to the jail, the transfer was very violent for Becker, and he was pushed into a solitary cell in prison. He had a small television in his cell room, which wasn’t clean. A small hole in the prison wall was fresh air. There were no mirrors, as a convict could break them and use it as a weapon. Becker says that while in prison, he was frightened but never cried. After being thrown into his cell and the door closed, Becker felt very lonely. The icon says that was the loneliest he ever felt.

Becker’s partner, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, stayed by his side and never left the player. She remained his loyal friend and partner. Becker advised her to continue in life as she was very young, and she didn’t have to wait for him. His girlfriend told him not to be ridiculous and that they would get past that huddle together.
