The horrifying incident involved a catastrophic cut to his neck from a skate blade, witnessed by around 8,000 spectators at Sheffield Arena, Guardian report revealed.
The arrest comes after a thorough investigation, with South Yorkshire Police revealing that the detained individual remains in custody. Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall emphasised the complexity of the case, stating, "Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy, and we have been carrying out extensive enquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances."
Adam Johnson, originally from Minnesota in the United States, had signed with Nottingham Panthers in August, adding a new chapter to his career, which included playing for teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins, Malmö Redhawks in Sweden, and Augsburger Panther in Germany.
The arrest follows the opening of an inquest into Johnson's death, during which Sheffield coroner Tanyka Rawden urged for compulsory neck guards in the sport. The coroner expressed concern about potential future deaths if such protective gear is not adopted.
