Actor Richard E Grant opens up about his childhood trauma. Here’s what he said

While appearing as a guest on Desert Island Discs on November 6, actor Richard E Grant candidly talked about his upsetting childhood and how his late wife, Joan Washington, helped him cope with hard times.

The Oscar-nominated actor appeared on the programme five days after marking his wedding anniversary. Grant met his wife when he hired Washington as a voice coach. Grant stated that they were shocked after learning about Washington's lung cancer in 2020 and detailed how they prioritised spending time together before her death in September 2021. Joan Washington was a renowned dialect expert.

The 65-year-old actor also recommended keeping a diary to cope with trying times. On the programme, Grant recalled his encounter with his mother and her lover and why the actor's father chased him with a gun.




Recalling past events, the actor said that he witnessed his mother getting intimate with his father's best friend, but he could not tell anyone. He said that he had continued keeping a diary since his childhood to "make sense of the world" that he lived in.

Besides, Grant said that when his father started to drink heavily, he intervened by pouring whisky bottles down the sink. And it was during this time his father chased him with a gun. The veteran actor stated that his father missed his shot because he was quite drunk.
