Abortions Onscreen report finds TV underrepresents most common form of abortion methods

The TV advertisements that portray abortions are often not actual, according to a research study conducted on Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health by the University of California San Francisco. The methods like medication abortion or abortion by pill make up about 6 percent of US abortions.

Comparatively, some women are depicted as dead or killed when obtaining an abortion. These are adverse effects of abortion and represent instilling of vague ideas about abortion than reality. Another report noted that the root cause of one such abortion was the parent struggling with his basics to meet. Some shows also portray some wrongs about this concept of abortion.

Misrepresentation is simply in bundles when it gets to abortions. And it is always someone wealthier or whiter who undergoes this process than their real-life counterparts. The facts on such TV advertisements are no different this year compared to the last.



Looking at some statistics from January to December 2022 that there were 60 abortion plotlines in all 52 different TV shows. When compiling this year's data, the Supreme court's decision on the Dobbs case is a highlight in the criminalization of abortion area. But this is an inflated view of abortions as the most common form of abortion in the US is underrepresented. Two shows, Shonda Rhimes and Grey's Anatomy have a dialogue on the proper abortion-pill protocol that gives a broad perspective to the audience on this topic. Actress Roundtable's Claire Foy was a bit blunt onscreen, stating what real-life abortion looks like. Polley, a director, also articulated how moviemakers fetishize common issues like rape, childbirth, and abortion. The shows misinform many audiences and are misled on legal aspects as well sometimes.
