85-yr-old Lucille Downer fatally attacked by out-of-control dogs, owner sentenced to prison
An 85-year-old woman passed away after dogs attacked and mauled her leading to fatal injuries. The owner of the dogs has been punished.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that on the afternoon of April 2, Downer suffered fatal neck injuries during the dogs' attack. Despite efforts by neighbors, who rushed to her aid, the retired cook succumbed to her multiple injuries. Judge Michael Chambers KC described the incident as a "dreadful and sustained attack," emphasizing that Downer, who was living with dementia, should have felt safe in her own garden. However, the dogs managed to breach the fence due to Pritchard's negligence in allowing them to roam freely.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the dogs had previously entered another neighbor's garden just weeks before the tragic incident. Prosecutors highlighted Pritchard's actions, citing witnesses who had observed him repeatedly hitting one of the dogs and goading another while it was on a leash. Such conduct indicated a lack of responsibility and foresight on the part of the owner, according to prosecutor Howard Searle.
Pritchard's defense attorney, Morgan Pirone, acknowledged his client's deep remorse for the devastating consequences of his actions. He stressed that the incident had irreparably harmed the Downer family and that Pritchard could neither forget nor forgive himself for what had transpired. The court recognized the severity of the offense and the impact it had on the victim and her loved ones.
Judge Chambers handed down a prison sentence of 45 months to Pritchard for the offense under the Dangerous Dogs Act. Additionally, Pritchard had pleaded guilty to charges of possessing cannabis with intent to supply and producing the drug. For these offenses, he received a consecutive 12-month sentence.
