A 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death while on her way to school just south of London on Wednesday morning.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the horrifying incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. in Croydon, a bustling residential and business district situated just south of London. Officers were on the scene within two minutes of receiving reports of the stabbing. Despite the immediate response and the efforts of paramedics and an air ambulance, the girl was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Approximately 75 minutes later, authorities apprehended a 17-year-old male suspect near Croydon. It is believed that the suspect may have had some prior connection to the victim. The individual, who has not been identified, is now in custody. Based on the available information, the police are not actively seeking any other individuals in connection with this distressing incident.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain expressed the deep sorrow felt by law enforcement and emergency service personnel, stating, "This is every parent's worst nightmare, and I know the officers who responded this morning, along with our emergency service colleagues, are devastated at the victim's death." He added that he shares in this profound sadness and acknowledges that the entire community of Croydon is likely feeling the same emotions.

At the scene, a white forensic tent was erected within a police cordon, marking the gravity of the situation. While incidents involving young individuals in London have sadly occurred, it is relatively uncommon for such tragedies to involve girls.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan conveyed his heartbreak in response to this tragedy, and the Metropolitan Police's top officer, Mark Rowley, described the murder of the 15-year-old girl on her way to school as "impossible to comprehend."
