UK jobless numbers touch 12-year high of 1.97 mn

In yet another manifestation of the deepening economic recession, the UK has seen the unemployment numbers surging to 1.97 million for the three months ending December, reportedly the highest in 12 years.

LONDON: In yet another manifestation of the deepening economic recession, the UK has seen the unemployment numbers surging to 1.97 million for the three months ending December, reportedly the highest in 12 years.

During the September-December period, the jobless rate shot up to 6.3 per cent.

"The unemployment level was 1.97 million in the three months to December 2008, up 1,46,000 from the three months to September 2008 and up 3,69,000 from a year earlier," UK's Office for National Statistics said in a statement today.

The number of unemployed people is reportedly the most since 1997.

According to the latest statistics, the jobless rate was 6.3 per cent in the three months ending December, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from the year-ago period.

During the three-month period, the number of unemployed men jumped 1,06,000 to 1.18 million while the count of jobless women climbed 40,000 to 7,90,000.

"There has been a fall in both the number of people in employment and the employment rate. The number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all increased... The number of vacancies has fallen," the statement said.
