Toyota says Prius sales top one million

TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp said Thursday that sales of the Prius, the world's first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid vehicle, had topped one million since its launch about a decade ago.

The Japanese auto giant first launched the Prius in Japan in 1997, followed by North America, Europe and elsewhere in 2000.

It has since introduced the system to sports utility vehicles (SUVs), mini-vans and other vehicles.

Toyota said that it had sold about 1.028 million Prius vehicles as of the end of April this year.

A pioneer of fuel-efficient vehicles along with rival Honda, it had reported in June that sales of all of its hybrid models had topped one million.

Toyota aims to sell at least one million hybrid vehicles every year from as early as possible in the 2010s.

Japanese automakers have enjoyed brisk profits in overseas markets, helped by firm demand for fuel-efficient cars and a weak yen.

But a credit crunch, the surging cost of raw materials and a falling dollar are now weighing on their earnings prospects.

Last week Toyota forecast its first drop in annual profits in nine years.
