Total could make acquisitions in solar energy to speed up its development in the sector, its chief executive said on Wednesday.

PARIS: Total could make acquisitions in solar energy to speed up its development in the sector, its chief executive said on Wednesday.

"On complementary energies and first on solar energy, we have been interested in it for many years, but we have decided to clearly strengthen our development effort, even going as far as making acquisitions, if they are necessay to gain time," Christophe de Margerie told a French parliamentary hearing.

Total has a presence in the solar energy sector through its 50 percent stake in Photovoltech, a solar cell manufacturer, and its 50 percent stake in Tenesol, a solar energy specialist.
