Steelmaker Corus says could cut 366 more British jobs
Steelmaker Corus said that it could cut another 366 jobs at a plant in Scunthorpe, northeastern England, owing to weak steel demand in the global economic downturn.

LONDON: Indian-owned steelmaker Corus said Thursday that it could cut another 366 jobs at a plant in Scunthorpe, northeastern England, owing to weak steel demand in the global economic downturn.
Corus, which has major facilities in Britain and the Netherlands, has now shed almost 6,000 jobs since the start of the year.
"Corus has today announced proposals to improve the competitiveness of its Scunthorpe site in north east England by aligning employment costs with anticipated steel demand," the group said in a statement.
"As a result, 366 jobs are identified as being at risk. Consultations with employees and their representatives have begun on the Scunthorpe site today."
Corus had said last month that it could cut up to 2,045 more jobs, mostly in Britain, as it battles the downturn.
The group, which also has facilities in the Netherlands, had also announced plans in January to cut 3,500 jobs worldwide- including 2,500 in Britain.
The global steel industry has been savaged by a collapse in orders from the auto and construction sectors, which have also buckled under the weight of a vicious worldwide economic slump.

Corus's parent company Tata Steel- the sixth-largest steelmaker in the world- reported a 60 per cent fall in annual net profits last month, mainly due to its European restructuring costs.Download
