Spanish jobless claims rose in August for the first time in four months as a slowdown in the tourism industry and the end of summer hiring period saw layoffs from the services sector.

MADRID: Spanish jobless claims rose in August for the first time in four months as a slowdown in the tourism industry and the end of summer hiring period saw layoffs from the services sector.

The number of jobless rose 84,985 or 2.4 percent in August from July to 3.62 million people, just over a million more than a year earlier, the Labour Ministry said on Wednesday.

"This is due to new additions to the labour market and the end of seasonal contracts from the tourist industry which has not reached previous year's levels," Employment Secretary General Maravillas Rojo said in a statement.

The service industry shed 47,805 jobs in August from July followed by construction, with 20,400 lay offs and industry with 11,471 more unemployed.

Spain does not provide an unemployment rate month on month, but according to the European Union statistics office on Tuesday, the unemployment in July stood at 18.5 percent compared to the average for the 27-member EU of 9 percent.
